Best Time to Go

Year-round. The shoulder season is April through July and a great time to go for less crowds, but remarkable wildlife vieiwing. During this time the migration is gaining in numbers in the Serengerti and herds are seen in mass. August through October is high season with the greatest number of visitors and optimum wildlife viewing as the grasses are low. November and December are the light rains with scattered showers and fewer crowds and January through March is considered the proper rainy season. The rainy season still offers plentiful game drives with great wildlife viewing and many days of no rain.   The wildebeest migrtion move in a circular pattern year-round throughout the region.

TANZANIA HIGHLIGHTS

  • Serengeti National Park - Tanzania’s flagship safari park and part of the Great Migration — where over 1.5 million wildebeest and zebras move in search of fresh grazing. Year-round Big Five viewing (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, rhino). Best time for the migration: June–October (river crossings) and January–March (calving season).

  • Ngorongoro Crater - A UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most wildlife-dense areas on Earth. The world’s largest intact volcanic caldera, home to lions, rhinos, elephants, hippos, and flamingos — all in one place.

  • Tarangire National Park - Famous for huge elephant herds and dramatic baobab-studded landscapes. Excellent birdlife and seasonal migration between June–October.

  • Lake Manyara National Park - Known for tree-climbing lions, flamingos, and lush groundwater forest. Compact, easy-to-visit park often included in northern circuit safaris.

  • Mount Kilimanjaro - Africa’s highest peak at 5,895 meters (19,341 ft).

  • One of the Seven Summits, attracting climbers from around the world.

  • Several trekking routes available — most popular is the Machame Route.

  • Mount Meru - Often overshadowed by Kilimanjaro but a beautiful, quieter climb.

  • Excellent warm-up trek with diverse scenery and wildlife.

  • Zanzibar (Unguja Island) - Famed for its white-sand beaches, turquoise waters, and Swahili-Arab culture. Stone Town (UNESCO site) offers history, spice markets, and ancient architecture. Popular beach areas: Nungwi, Paje, Kendwa.

  • Pemba & Mafia Islands - Quieter alternatives to Zanzibar, ideal for diving, snorkeling, and romantic escapes. Mafia Island is part of a marine park and known for whale sharks (Oct–March). Selous Game Reserve (Nyerere National Park) - One of Africa’s largest protected areas, offering boat safaris, walking safaris, and classic game drives. Remote and less crowded than the northern circuit.

  • Ruaha National Park - Tanzania’s best-kept secret: huge, wild, and rarely visited. Offers excellent predator sightings and a true wilderness feel.

  • Maasai Cultural Experiences - Visit traditional Maasai villages near Arusha, Ngorongoro, or in the Serengeti region. Learn about their customs, dress, and way of life through responsible tourism programs.

  • Lake Natron - A surreal soda lake with flamingos and eerie red-pink water.Set against the backdrop of Ol Doinyo Lengai, an active volcano sacred to the Maasai.
