May Weather Southern Africa and Madagascar

Madagascar will be the most hot, humid and buggy at this time of year. Make sure to wear mosquito repellent and have it in your daypack with you at all times. You will be doing some rainforest walks so have your daypack prepared with sunscreen, sun hat, mosquito repellent and water bottle. Guides speak English as a second language and sometimes don’t prepare you for the days events as well as would be expected, so be prepared each day with these items and anything else you will want for sun and mosquito protection. Having a good walking shoe and layered clothing is advised. Many of the lodges will light mosquito coils, or spray and mosquito netting is provided in lodges without air-conditioning, but you may want to sleep with light weight pajamas and socks for extra protection.

Botswana, Zimbabwe and Kruger Park, South Africa will be colder in the morning and evening requiring a fleece or jacket and pants and hot, t-shirt and shorts weather during the day. This is nice for mosquito relief as you will see less in these areas at this time of year, but you will still want to be prepared. Many of the lodges will light mosquito coils and mosquito netting is provided, but you may want to sleep with light weight pajamas for extra protection. You are waling distance from the falls at Ilala lodge.. They are BOOMING at this time of year and you will get wet. Rain protection and sturdy, non-slip, quick-dry walking shoes are recommended.

Cape Town, South Africa will be cooler and possibly rainy or overcast many days, but you might also get plenty of sun and balmy days of t-shirt weather. It is the equivalent of November or March in San Diego. It can be quite chilly in the old Cape Dutch buildings and most hotels don’t offer central heating although they may smaller room heaters. Mornings and evenings should be chilly.
